Tata Tiago price specs launchHomegrown auto giant Tata Motors is ready to rejuvenate its dominance in the sub-compact diesel car market. The company has played a long inning in this segment owing to the Indica that came as a boon for the fleet market and has also influenced many family car buyers to break the notion that only a petrol-powered vehicle can be a good family car. The Indica came in 1998 and was first-of-its-type diesel vehicle that time. It was a bold and revolutionary move, worth paying attention for the entire auto market given that this segment was dominated by petrol-powered cars. But now the situation is different. Almost every automaker present in the segment offering contemporary styling & equipment, are significantly refined and of course have more grunt at their disposal than the aging Tata Indica. Now, the Tata Tiago is coming to re-strengthen company’s position in the sub-compact hatchback segment. And, undoubtedly, the Tiago is not just an updated Indica. An eye-catching design, modern interior, brilliant fit and finish, new underpinnings & engine options, and of course better buying experience are some of the key highlights. But how good is the Tiago at rivaling the already well-settled players? Let’s find the answer!

Engine, Specifications & Mileage –

As said above, the Tata Tiago is coming in both petrol and diesel versions. Both engines are newly-built and developed to meet segment’s demands like higher fuel efficiency. Powering the Tata Tiago diesel is a 1.05-liter 3-pot turbocharged motor that is good for 70 PS at 4,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 3,000 rpm. While figures are not that impressive, it’s major rivals will remain the likes of Celerio diesel, Grand i10 and Beat and hence could appear sufficient against them. Second crucial aspect of the RevoTorq is the torque graph goes flat from as low as 1,800 rpm to 3,000 rpm that would result less gear shifts during urban driving.

The second option is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder natural-aspirated setup. This is actually the non-turbo version of the Revotron 1199 cc petrol engine that serves duty under the hood of the Zest and Bolt. Power rating of this new derivation is 85 PS at 6,000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm.Tata Tiago Steering Wheel

Both these power-plants are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Its AMT version is inevitable but initially Tata is restricting the model to manual option.

Chassis, Suspension & Brakes –

The only similarity, as Tata claims, between the Indica and the Tiago is their platform. Both cars are underpinned by XO platform. It’s a proven setup given that the Indica is tackling Indian roads since almost 18 years but makes the car a bit clumsy the moment one starts pushing its horses. Anyway, Tata says a lot changes have been made to mounts, construction of the platform in order to achieve significantly lowered body roll and improved driving dynamics. We reserve our statement though until we’ve test driven the car.

Like its rivals, the Tata Tiago features McPherson strut bars with coil springs at front and semi-independent twist beam suspension at rear. Stopping power comes from a combination of disc brakes at front and drum-type at rear. Range-topping variants of the Tata Tiago feature Anti-lock braking system also. Tata has incorporated some new tech into that named as Corner Stability Control.

Design & Features –

Design would be one of the biggest USPs of the new Tata hatchback. The car appeals so youthful and contemporary, thanks to its sharp edged and well-proportioned design which is seldomin case of Tata cars. However, the company has shown a great improvement in its design philosophy and overall built quality in the recent times. Gone are the days when you can find asymmetric gaps between body panels and interior elements.Tata TiagoFront look of the vehicle is quite impactful with those stretched head lamps and bold honeycomb grille, finished in piano black. From sides, it doesn’t look like a typical Tata as prominent body lines, wide windows and slim pillars making it look artistic, not as bland as Tata cars used to be. The rear-end is even more exciting. Wrap around horizontal tail lamps, raked windscreen and neatly sculpted dual-tone bumper are breaking the norm. Besides this, the top-end variant looks even more appealing with rear spoiler and alloy wheels.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Tata Tiago are well designed and features high-tech equipment. The cabin is finished in grey and black tone with instrument panel’s top layer wrapped in soft touch material. Basic cabin layout is identical to that of the Bolt but adding more to its appearance are elements like wide center console and stylish side air cons which merging well into door panels and creating a symmetrical look.Tata Tiago interior Further, piano black touches around center console and chrome detailing on rotary AC knobs and instrument console adding a premium touch. Seats are well-bolstered and wide but lacks a little in lumbar support. Other issue we’ve found inside the cabin is floor is not flat at rear. It’s annoyingly high like the one you can find in a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Anyway, Tata Tiago comes with a few class-leading features. The first being the driving modes – Eco and City – to suit different driving situations. If you’re crawling through traffic and want to keep an eye on fuel consumption, put the car in Eco mode otherwise keep the car in City mode for optimum performance. On the safety front, the Tiago has Anti-lock braking system with Corner Stability Control, front airbags, rear parking sensors and central locking with remote. Tyre size of the Tata Tiago is 175/65 R14, that on the top-end comes shod with alloy wheels.What’s more interesting is the music system can be synchronized with android based Juke Car App through which a total of 10 smartphones can be connected and queue music. This is also the first vehicle to have some navigation support. With Turn-by-turn app, user can sync his phone navigation to the infotainment system which then displays expected time of arrival and distance to destination.

The Tata Tiago is coming in a total of 6 body colors and 5 variants – XB, XE, XM, XT and XZ. Sunset orange being model’s marketing color. The color options are named as mentioned below:
