Volkswagen India is all set to launch the diesel version of its lately-introduced Ameo in India today. This is the first model that raising company’s flag in sub-4 meter compact cars segment. So far, the Ameo offers choice of petrol option only – a 1.2-liter 3-pot motor – and hence the response is also quite subtle from the market. But this new powertrain may help it to gain position and come up as a true-blue competitor of the likes of Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire & Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.
In terms of specifications, it won’t be any different from the Polo TDi. A 1.5-liter 4-cylinder motor under the hood that will produce 90 PS and 230 Nm of torque. A higher-spec variant of the same engine should also be on offer, equipped with variable geometry turbo, offering 105 PS and 250 Nm of torque at disposal. Both units would come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox; possibility of a 7-speed DSG is also in the air.
On cosmetic and features front, the Ameo diesel won’t look or feel better than the current version. Three trim levels are said to be made available – Trendline, Comfortline & Highline – offering similar level of equipment available on the current petrol trims.
The Ameo diesel will be expensive by around Rs 80,000 to its petrol version. Stay tuned for more updates.
