Since its launch in 2012, the Ford EcoSport has done a wonderful job in the Indian auto market not only by satisfying the fancy of economical car buyers here but also by boosting a new life in company’s profile. Its chiseled looks, compact dimensions, surprisingly competitive price tag and the robust built quality made it an instant success here. For those who don’t know, the EcoSport also became the first Ford in India that bore a waiting period of above 6 months. Since last one year, however, its charm has become fading away since the model is facing tough competition from the newer players such as Vitara Brezza, TUV300 and the Hyundai Creta. However, to answer all these new pseudo-SUVs the new 2017 Ford EcoSport is here.
Unveiled at 2016 LA Auto show, the new EcoSport has been extensively revised both inside & out. More importantly, you also get an all-wheel drive setup with a new 2.0-liter petrol engine under the hood. However, this variant is unlikely for Indian market at all.Beginning with the exterior, the first thing I’ve personally liked about the new EcoSport is its detailed front-end. The car looks more mature now. Thanks to broader headlamps and single-frame hexagonal grille besides bigger triangular fog lamps, the car appears more of an tranquil crossover now than an exaggerated coquette as before.
On sides, the new EcoSport is not showing any major improvement, saves for the new alloy wheels. From rear, the 2017 EcoSport is more or less similar to the outgoing version but the Europe & US-spec models have given a miss to the tailgate-mounted spare wheel. This change is not expected on Asian models, though, which will be introduced in India probably within first quarter of 2017.Step inside and the new EcoSport is not a typical Ford anymore. Although, the dashboard shape is quite similar to the previous one but the center console layout and design is entirely new. Those wing-shaped vents are not there either. Ford Sync 3 infotainment system is lighting up the cabin with its large touchscreen display installed in a pop-up style. Instead of silver, the interior has orange accents now. However, whether it’s standard across the range and the India-specific model will also get it is yet to be known. Apart from these changes, Ford has also improved the instrument cluster and steering wheel.Powering the model will be same powertrain options – 1.0-litre EcoBoost, 1.5-liter TDCi & a 1.5-litre petrol motor with DCT. Another option will be, as mentioned above, all-wheel drive with a 2.0-litre unit. This is not expected in Asian market though.
The new 2017 Ford EcoSport will help American automaker to regain its lost market share against players like Brezza & TUV300. We can also expect offering of customization packages and so on the new EcoSport since Maruti and Mahindra are quite sincere in attracting audience through these measures.
We hope the new 2017 EcoSport will hit showrooms around March-April.
